Dr. Flavio Häner, vice-director of the pharmacy-museum at the University of Basel "Terra Sigillata: The first trademarked drug – with a big future? " Since Antiquity, pressed tablet of clays labelled as terra sigillata have been praised as potent antidote and remedy against various sicknesses. From the 16th up to the 19th century such clays have been produced and sold all over Europe, making terra sigillata one of the earliest examples of an industrial production of pharmaceuticals. Today, new analysis and research methods offer a new insight into the ancient drugs, that might have a big future.
